The College derives its authority from The Medical Act, which can only be amended by the Legislative Assembly. The Medical Act provides the framework within which the College Operates.
The Medical Act describes certain areas for which the College is responsible. These include, but are not limited to:
- registration and licensing of members and associate members;
- maintenance of various registers with names and qualifications of those registered, including one for specialists, and a register of medical corporations;
- creation and maintenance of individual physician profiles of members of the College that are available to the public; and
- developing, establishing and maintaining standards of practice and ethics by members.
